Artist Statement
Raised in Hong Kong and Taiwan and now residing in Halifax, I am a multicultural artist exploring identity, cultural displacement, and the concept of “home.” As a third-culture kid, I’ve never felt fully rooted in one place, living in the in-between of cultures I simultaneously belong to and feel distanced from. My art serves as a way to navigate this ambiguity and reflect on my ever-shifting sense of self.
My practice incorporates photography, jewelry, printmaking, collage, and mixed media, blending imagery from Hong Kong and Taiwan’s urban landscapes with studies of native Taiwanese flowers, especially orchids. Orchids captivate me for their paradoxical nature: delicate in domestic spaces yet resilient and thriving in the wild. They symbolize adaptability and strength, qualities I see in my own journey.
I also explore the contrast between Taiwan’s bustling cities and tranquil rural life. These environments hold distinct and complementary beauty, offering inspiration through their opposing qualities. When one overwhelms, the other offers solace, fueling my creativity.
Having lived in three countries, my identity is an evolving narrative of past and present selves. My work examines the interplay of belonging and displacement, permanence and change, inviting viewers to consider their own perceptions of “home.”
Artist Biography
Christie Melville is a multicultural artist, with an upbringing in Hong Kong and Taiwan. As a multidisciplinary artist, she has explored a wide range of mediums, from music and photography, to printmaking and jewelry. She is currently living and working in Halifax while attending NSCAD University, pursuing a BFA in Interdisciplinary arts, with a minor in jewelry. This exhibit showcases her photography work, through a narrative and experimental lens.
Growing up, Christie attended school in Hong Kong for 15 years, then moved to Taiwan to complete her schooling. Here she decided that she wanted to pursue art for her University degree.
Her work explores organic forms and biomimicry, as she naturally gravitates towards flowers and fauna in her artistic practice. Within recent years, she has delved into exploring how her cultural background has altered her worldview, whilst discovering how these ephemeral emotions can be translated in her work.
Christie’s illustrations have appeared in a Poetry book, “夢的截圖/ Vignettes of a Dream”, and has had lithography and intaglio prints displayed in the Anna Leonowens Gallery. She is also a burgeoning jeweler, creating her own pieces as well as custom pieces.
